The rule behind it: the playing surface plus a cue length on each side, so you can play a shot from the rail. Brunswick's figures are close to that sum, not exact.

Good to know

  • WPA tournament playing surface (inside the cushions): 9 ft = 100 x 50 in (2.54 x 1.27 m), 8 ft = 92 x 46 in (2.3368 x 1.1684 m), tolerance 1/8 in. WPA says these specs 'do not necessarily apply to tables manufactured for commercial home use'. The WPA document read covers only 9 ft and 8 ft.
  • Cue length: the WPA spec sets a minimum of 40 in (1.016 m) and no maximum; it does not set 57 or 58 in. 58 in is Brunswick's 'standard cue'; 52 and 48 in are shorter cues for small rooms. Snooker (WPBSA): cue not less than 3 ft (914 mm).
  • A home 8 ft table is usually 44 x 88 in (Brunswick) while the WPA 8 ft is 46 x 92 in, which Brunswick sells as 'Oversize 8 ft' (often called 8 ft pro).
