How TV sizes work
- Screen size is the diagonal of the visible picture. Width and height follow from geometry and the aspect ratio.
- For 16:9, the diagonal of a 16 x 9 rectangle is sqrt(256 + 81) = sqrt(337), so width = diagonal x 16/sqrt(337) (about 0.8716) and height = diagonal x 9/sqrt(337) (about 0.4903). This is the general formula below with AR = 16/9.
- Viewing distance has no single standard. THX recommends about a 40 degree view angle (distance = diagonal / 0.84, about 1.2 x diagonal for 1080p) and gives a range out to about 28 degrees.
- The '30 degree SMPTE' figure (about 1.6 x diagonal for 16:9) is widely quoted, but Wikipedia notes there seems to be no direct recommendation from SMPTE itself. Recorded as a common rule, not an SMPTE standard.
- The '2.5 x diagonal' rule (about 20 degrees) is a manufacturer and retailer rule of thumb; CNET suggested 1.5 x diagonal for high-resolution content.

Questions
How wide is a 65 inch TV?
The screen of a 16:9 65 inch TV is 56.7 in wide and 31.9 in tall (143.9 x 80.9 cm). The TV itself is a little bigger because of the frame.
How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?
About 6.5 ft (2.0 m) for the 40 degree view THX recommends, or about 8.8 ft (2.7 m) for the common 30 degree rule.
How much bigger is a 75 inch TV than a 65 inch?
The screen area is about 33% bigger (75 squared over 65 squared), even though the diagonal is only 15% longer.
